Kori and I arrived at the palace well after midnight. The storm had calmed so that, by the time weâd left the Alchemy shop, the snow had almost stopped entirely. As we walked, I got her chatting about the good times and, while it took a bit of effort, I was able to get her to laugh. It was good to see a genuine smile on her face and it made the journey feel quick.
A group of guards stood at the gate and sent us through without delay. I nodded to them politely. They were growing more familiar with me, and I was looking forward to helping them train. It was the least I could do since they were instrumental in keeping the palace from being overrun. We reached the front of the palace to find three guards standing with polearms, guarding the door.
âCaden, I was told to give this to you.â The captain said, reaching into his coat and pulling out a slip of paper to hand to me. Looking at his face, I saw that the guard captain looked tired, his eyes bloodshot. I nodded and thanked him, watching as he stepped back into his post.
One of the other guards let us in through the front doors and locked it behind us. Kori looked up at the large entry hall with wide eyed amazement. There was a single lantern by the door, but it didnât give off enough light to properly show off the room.
Unfolding the paper, I read over the note quickly. It was written in Seraphinaâs handwriting which was overly accented by curls and swoops. She requested that Kori and I join her in the library.
âWould you be willing to have a quick meeting?â
Kori nodded. âIâm tired, but we might as well get the introduction over with.â
Conjuring a flame in the palm of my hand to light the way, I led Kori through the palace to the second-story library where Seraphina would be waiting for us. The palace was quiet, and the sounds of our boots echoed down the long stone corridors.
The doors to the library were open, and Seraphina was reading beside the fire when we arrived. As we entered, I saw that she was thumbing through Hevronâs grimoire and felt a slight chill run down my spine. I wanted nothing more than to toss it into the fire and let the evil contents burn. But information, as evil and vile as it may be, was too valuable to be wasted, regardless of the comfort it would bring.
âThank you for waiting up for us,â I said, meeting the regal womanâs eyes.
Seraphina looked at us warmly, though I could tell that she was putting up a front. âItâs not like you gave me much of a choice,â she said, her musical voice sounding tired.
âI apologize.â
âForgive me. Welcome Kori, itâs a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance.â
âThe honor is mine.â Kori shifted back on her feet, hands clutching the sides of her cloak.
âCaden has spoken highly of you, and youâre welcome to stay as long as you need.
